Welcome to #DeInfluencingDietCulture

De-Influencing Diet Culture is a live campaign raising awareness and providing supportive spaces for Generation Z women and students effected by toxic diet culture online. The campaign components will include a website, Instagram page, online articles, creative workshops and a workbook resource for university wellbeing teams to provide for university students struggling with body image.

Why is this an important issue?

Diet culture online has fluctuated for many years, exposing young women to societal beauty standards that are unattainable or focus on specific ‘end goals’ which encourages unhealthy and- in some circumstances- disordered eating behaviours with 70% of women claiming to edit their images due to dissatisfaction with their natural appearance as a result of social media consumption. We have seen a surge in the use of social media apps like TikTok and Instagram being used by ‘91% of the UK and US adolescents’ and over ‘50% checking these at least once per hour’ which causes the content consumed on these apps to have a detrimental impact on these young users.

#DeInfluencingDietCulture aims to provide a safe space and community for women and students alike who are impacted by diet culture on social media. Workshops and resources intend to provide creative, therapeutic activities to engage the mind and educate how to think critically when scrolling to decrease the influence of content on platforms like Instagram and TikTok.

I hope you feel welcome here and eager to attend the creativity, community and shared safe space for discussions of body image and body compassion.
